Jesse Newell
Sports Reporter
Call Jesse at 620-342-4805.
Jesse Newell has been a sports reporter at The Emporia Gazette since July 31, 2006.
He was born and raised in Emporia, graduating from Emporia High School in 2002. He began his journalism career at the Emporia Gazette, working as a sports stringer for four years starting his sophomore year in high school. He was sports editor of EHS' "The Echo" newspaper before heading to the University of Kansas. There, he worked for the University Daily Kansan, working four semesters as the beat reporter for football, women's basketball and men's basketball. He also gained part-time experience with the Topeka Capital-Journal and Lawrence Journal-World newspapers. He graduated in May 2006 with a double-major in journalism and communications.
Jesse covers the ESU sports beat for the Gazette. In addition to sports, he enjoys sleeping in and Royals baseball games, even though his record at the "K" is usually uninspiring. His favorite player is David DeJesus, least favorite is Angel Berroa, and he believes that even though Ryan Shealy suffered through a horrible 2007, he still will set the Royals' home run record this season.
Jesse has been known to wear a goatee, not because he likes it but because without it, he often is still mistaken as a high schooler.
If you would like to vent about Jesse's articles, there is probably a family member in town nearby with whom you could speak. Father Dennis is a teacher at Emporia Middle School; mother Barb is a secretary at Emporia State University; brother Jake is an art student at ESU; and sister Jennifer is a freshman at ESU.
If you have any compliments, however, feel free to contact Jesse at sports@emporiagazette.com or newell@emporiagazette.com.
