Further cuts mean less money for ESU
Thursday, July 2, 2009
More state spending cuts are on the way, Gov. Mark Parkinson announced Thursday, and those cuts will further affect education aid in Kansas.
Parkinson announced an additional $160 million in cuts to keep ahead of mounting budget shortfalls. Tax collections for the just-ended fiscal year fell $126 million short of expectations.
The latest round of cuts will result in about $650,000 less for Emporia State University, according to president Michael Lane, who said the school has been expecting the cuts and has been preparing for how to deal with them.
“We were expecting something, so we’ve been planning for it, but I can’t tell you exactly what the result will be,” Lane said. “We just learned about it (Thursday) morning.”
Lane said so far the cuts shouldn’t result in layoffs or furloughs for ESU employees, at least at this point.
“Obviously we’ll continue to cut costs where we can and continue to leave positions vacant that are already vacant,” he said. “That’s the only way we can save significant money.”
