Council Grove drama celebrates Indian heritage
Friday, September 5, 2008
A drama in Council Grove will give audience members an opportunity to learn about the Kaw Indians and the Santa Fe trail.
The drama will be at 8 p.m. Sept. 12 and 13 in the Old Riverbed Amphitheater in Council Grove.
“The tribe was exiled from Kansas 135 years ago, but the Kanza (or Kaw) lives on in the outdoor drama, ‘Voices of the Wind People,’” a press release stated.
The pageant is co-sponsored by the Kaw Nation, Kaw Mission State Historic Site and the pageant committee of the Friends of the Kaw Heritage. The presentation is multi-media and combines live action scenes that are set in Kaw Village and Council Grove in the 1800s. The production features Council Grove citizens and Kaw Indians.
Artwork, photographs, images of the Flint Hills and videotaped segments will be broadcast on a large screen. The live portion of the production will include singing, dancing, drumming, fiddling, bagpipe playing, mandolin music and sound effects. There also will be a Santa Fe Trail horse-drawn pack train and two wagon caravans.
There will be various scenes depicted in the production including: the signing of the 1825 Council Oak Treaty; trading at the Seth Hays store; a confrontation between Kaw warriors and Euro-Americans in 1859; bushwhackers at Council Grove in 1863; a typical Kaw village; and the forced removal of the Kaw Tribe from Kansas.
Several other events will take place Saturday before the production. These events, sponsored by the Morris County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and the Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race Endurance Ride, include the Kaw Nation Trail Ride in Morris County; an all-equestrian parade and Prairie Art Walk in downtown Council Grove; and a chuck wagon dinner and free concert featuring Johnny Western and Diamond W Wranglers at the Ride Village, Kanza View, Council Grove Federal Reservoir. Native American flute player, TerryLee Whetston, will perform at 7 p.m. until the pageant begins at 8 p.m. Other events begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Kanza Agency site at Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park. Ron Parks will present “More than Meets the Eye: A Close Look at the Kanza Agency.” This event is free and open to the public.
