Early morning fire guts house
Thursday, May 8, 2008
Emporia Fire Department battled an early morning blaze on Exchange Street this morning after a fire broke out in an abandoned home.
The fire at 1302 Exchange St. was called in at 4:35 a.m., said Rex Fisher, battalion chief. Fisher said the home is unoccupied. Fisher said the home was heavily involved in flames when crews arrived.
“I could see the glow from Sixth and Exchange,” he said.
Crews tried to battle the interior fire for a short time, Fisher said.
“Shortly after we got here flames were coming from the roof,” he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and the home, while still standing is gutted. Crews were still putting out hot spots at 8:30 this morning. Fisher said more information should be available later today from Fire Marshal Tom Andrews.
