Shoot fireworks safely

With fireworks sales beginning today, Emporia Fire Marshal Tom Andrews offered the following tips to help prevent injuries and fires while enjoying holiday fireworks. The tips were taken from recommendations of the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety.
• Always read and follow label directions.
• Have an adult present.
• Buy from reliable fireworks vendors.
• Use fireworks only outdoors and away from structures.
• Keep a garden hose or bucket of water close at hand.
• Never experiment or make your own fireworks.
• Light one item at a time.
• Never re-light a “dud” firework. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water.
• Never give fireworks to small children.
• Store, if necessary, in a cool, dry place.
• Soak fireworks in water before disposing of them in a trashcan.
• Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
• Never carry fireworks in pockets.
• Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
• The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the fireworks.
• Stay away from illegal explosives.
