Primary set for Mast's seat

Four have no opponents

Barring a surge of write-in voters, several candidates for office already have been elected because no one else filed for office. Two incumbents will have opponents, one in the primary and one in the general.

The deadline for filing for office was noon Tuesday.

Four current office-holders face no opposition in the August primary — Treasurer Dora Hartig, Democrat; Register of Deeds Vicky Lopez, Republican; Sheriff Gary Eichorn, Republican; and County Attorney Marc Goodman.

Long-time state representative from the 76th District, Peggy Mast, will defend her seat in a primary election in which she will face fellow Republican Tony Trimble of Coffey County. The district includes 2 precincts in Emporia, much of Lyon County and Coffey County and a portion of Greenwood County.

State Senator Jim Barnett, 17th District Republican, will be opposed in the November general election by Democrat Kitty Frank.

The district includes Lyon, Morris, and Chase counties and portions of Marion, Greenwood and Coffey counties.

Other races in this area will be determined in the general election. They candidates and the offices for which they filed are:

F 2nd District County Commissioner: Philip E. Winter, Democrat, Admire, and Teresa Walters, Republican, Emporia.

F 3rd District County Commissioner: Chris Bartel, Democrat, Madison, and Rollie Martin, Hartford, Republican.

F County Clerk: Michael (Mike) Dorcey, Democrat, Emporia, and Tammy Vopat, Republican, Emporia.

Other filings, all by Republicans, include:

Agnes City Township Treasurer, Dorothy Aye, Allen; Americus Township Trustee, Gerald L. Myers, Americus; Americus Township Treasurer, Lloyd Brown, Americus; Ivy Township Trustee, Phil Mott, Admire; Ivy Township Treasurer, Elden G. Kuhn, Admire; Jackson Township Trustee, Noble Thornton, Hartford.

Candidates for Reading Rural Fire District No. 1 positions are:

Mark R. Shoemaker, Reading, Position 1; Glenn Alan Barrett, Reading, Position 2; and Russell H. Balding, Reading, Position 3.
