Volunteers build eight benches at Peter Pan Park

Thursday, July 31, 2008

Eight new benches were built Wednesday evening at the Peter Pan Playground, allowing for ample seating around the playground.

Mike Dorcey, of the Peter Pan Playground build project, said this morning that all eight benches were completed Wednesday evening with the help of a group of volunteers.

“I was pleased,” Dorcey said. “It really went together quickly.”

Dorcey said the benches and some plaques to go on the benches were completed by 9 p.m. Wednesday evening. He added that the city plans on building a sidewalk from the street to the playground and around the entire playground. The playground was built earlier this year entirely by hundreds of community volunteers.

The build is ongoing, Dorcey said. The next project is lighting for the playground. Dorcey said about $5,000 will need to be raised for the lighting. Lighting would make the playground accessible after dark and reduce or eliminate potential vandalism. To donate toward the lighting, contact Denise Dorcey at 794-1622 or dorceyhaus@cableone.net or Mike Dorcey at 794-3476 or mikedorcey@cableone.net.
