Escapee caught in Emporia
Police search was brief
Wednesday, July 9, 2008
History repeated itself Wednesday afternoon when an Emporia police detective arrested a 30-year-old man who had escaped again from a New Hampshire state prison.
“He was put in there for a home invasion burglary, and this is the second time we found him in Emporia,” said Police Chief Gary Smith. “We arrested him in 2007 and charged him with felony theft because he stole a car.”
EPD officers were alerted to the escape today, and quickly captured Shaun Cook, 30.
“New Hampshire correctional people figured he’d be back,” Smith said.
“We put the information out and Det. Dennis Delmott was kind enough to find him over by the Wal-Mart area and picked him up.”
Smith said that New Hampshire officials said that Cook apparently had stolen a car that was found in Pennsylvania on July 6.
“I would guess that within an hour and a half, we had him in custody, so it was good police work,” he said.
Smith described Cook as being 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 178 pounds with closely cropped brown hair; he has a couple of identifying scars.
Cook told Emporia police that he was looking for work and had not broken any laws during his time here.
He was taken to the Lyon County Jail, where he is expected to await extradition to New Hampshire.
