Friday Thoughts

Friday Thoughts is a light-hearted commentary.
LAST WEEK, I came across a rooster standing at the front door of Longbine Auto Plaza. The investigative journalist inside me found this interesting and wondered why this bird was there. After all, it’s not every day you come across a rooster standing outside a local business.
I first wondered whether Jeff Longbine had brought his pet rooster to work. Then I remembered that Emporia has a city ordinance banning roosters living in town, so he couldn’t possibly own a pet rooster.
Next, I wondered whether Emporia city commissioners were taking part in some sort of Ag Appreciation Day where each city commissioner was given a rooster to care for. But I remembered last week that I hadn’t seen Commissioner Agler toting around a rooster at Emporia Motors.
The rooster was a majestic bird, but it looked kind of mean. Then I wondered whether Commissioner Longbine and the city were involved in some sort of international cockfighting ring with Mexico in an effort to raise some additional money for the city.
You know, I really don’t know why a rooster spent the day standing at the front door of Longbine’s business. But if more roosters start showing up around town, the city leaders may need to pass a rooster loitering ordinance.
